The Act on Public Cultural Institutions is on its way through the comment procedure

18/05/2023

The Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, using the evaluation and materials of the Association of Professional Theatres, prepared a draft Act on Public Cultural Institutions for the interdepartmental comment procedure - in which it unifies the positions of all interested parties. It cooperated on it with the Ministry of Finance and representatives of the professional public.

According to the Legislative Work Plan, the draft law should be submitted to the government in mid-2023.

"The Act on Public Institutions in Culture has been under consideration in our country for many years, and although several governments have promised it in the past, it has not yet been adopted. At the same time, it is an important legal norm that would simplify many things for cultural institutions and help them in their further development. It will increase their autonomy in the area of long-term planning. Multi-source financing will benefit cultural institutions in the regions in particular; for example, the city theater could also be significantly supported by the region. However, none of the cultural institutions will be forced to adopt a new legal personality; everything will be on a voluntary basis. The need for the law is also anchored in the Government's Program Statement. I am extremely pleased that thanks to intensive work, this has now been achieved and, after 17 years, we have a full-fledged version of the draft law," says Minister of Culture Martin Baxa.
