MgA. Stanislav Moša

Director and director of the Brno City Theatre, lyricist and librettist, born on February 12, 1956 in Nový Jičín. While attending elementary school, he attended the LŠU - majoring in drama and art. Until he finished his studies at the first secondary school, he actively played basketball.

After graduating from high school with an extended aesthetic education, he studied music and drama at the State Conservatory in Ostrava and then drama directing at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno (1983). At the same time as he finished his studies, he received an offer from director Milan Pásek to work at the then Mrštík Brothers Theatre, where he staged many dramaturgically interesting and exceptionally successful performances.

He completed his military service as a dramaturg of the so-called small units in the AUS in Prague (1983/84). In 1987, he received an offer to join the National Theatre in Prague and created successful productions there: Hubač's Blue Pavilion, Žáček's transcription of The Birds according to Aristophanes, and Spiró's Garden. From 1984 to 1994, he also worked as a teacher at the Brno JAMU, where he taught drama and musical acting, directing and theatre management. For three years, he led the JAMU Drama Studio - Martu as artistic director.


On September 1, 1990, Stanislav Moša was appointed artistic director of the Mrštík Brothers Theatre. After the departure of director J. Kolegar, he was appointed director of the theatre on February 1, 1992. On January 1, 1993, based on a successful audition, he was appointed director of the theatre, then still the Mrštík Brothers Theatre, and on June 1, 1993, of the Brno Municipal Theatre, where he still works today.

He has directed more than one hundred and fifty productions, not only in Czech theaters, but also abroad: Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Slovakia, Austria, Croatia, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.

Among the drama productions, we can mention A. Casona – The House with Seven Balconies and The Lady of the Morning, J. Schmidt – Thirteen Scents, K. Tachovský – The Plague, J. Bouček – Shepherds' Night, B. Hrabal – The Gentle Barbarian, NV Gogol – The Inspector General, S. Shepard – The Delusion of the Mind, V. Nezval – Manon Lescaut, E. Rostand – Cyrano of Bergerac, W. Shakespeare – Romeo and Juliet and Henry VIII., R. Bean – The Honeymoon Suite, F. Mitterer – In the Lion's Den, AP Chekhov – The Three Sisters, M. Kundera – James and His Master, he is behind the successful dramatization of Simon Mawer's novel The Glass Room and last but not least, he also directed Shakespeare's productions The Merchant of Venice, King Lear and Molière's famous comedy The Miser in the lead role with Boleslav Polívka. As a musical director, he has directed musicals such as Oliver!, My Fair Lady (from Zelňák), Radúz a Mahulena, The Witches of Eastwick, Les Misérables, Chicago, Spring Awakening, Birds according to Aristophanes, The Pope, Sugar! (Some Like It Hot), Blood Brothers, Flashdance, Cats, GHOST, TITANIC, Saturday Night Fever, Nine, The Last Ship, etc. Stanislav Moša is also the director of successful concert performances Broadway Musicals and Magical Broadway, with which the Brno ensemble successfully introduced itself to both Brno and foreign audiences throughout Europe. Under his direction, musicals such as Midsummer Night's Dream, West Side Story, Cabaret, Evita, Fame, Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and His Wonderful Many-Colored Cloak, Beauty and the Beast, The Sparrow and the Angel, etc. were created, which were also performed with international casts in many European cities. In 2010, he staged Honegger's oratorio Joan of Arc at the Border for Moravian Autumn.

Stanislav Moša is also a creative author, as a librettist and lyricist, mainly in collaboration with Zdenek Merta and Petr Ulrych. In drama, his own dramatizations of I. Kříž's novel The Truth about the Destruction of Sodom, and J. Hašek's novel The Fates of the Good Soldier Švejk have achieved the greatest acclaim, but recently he has been reaping the enormous success of his dramatization of Simon Mawer's novel The Glass Room. In the field of musical theater, he has created a number of projects - with Zdenek Merta Midsummer Night's Dreams (1991), the scenic oratorio Bastard (1993), the musical opera Babylon (1998), the musical World Full of Angels (2000), the fairy-tale musical for children Garden of Wonders (2004) and the first two parts of the musical trilogy A Fatal Comedy - Hell (2008) and Purgatory (2013). Together with Petr Ulrych, he wrote the musical ballad Radúz a Mahulena (1997) and based on the stories of Nikola Šuhaj, the musical Koločava (2001), Máj (2004) based on the works of Karel Hynek Mácha, and in 2007, the pair staged the production of Markéta Lazarová. With Miloš Štědroně, they created The Game of Love, Death and Eternity… (1998). Together with Zdenek Merta, he also prepared the megaproject Bernstein's Mass (1997 and 2001) with more than 300 performers at Prague Castle and the Brno Rondo Hall. In March 2005, the Prague State Opera staged Zdenek Merta's opera La Roulette, directed by Moša, for which Moša wrote the libretto.

He is a sought-after director both at home and abroad, where he has created over forty directorial and stage designs since the 1980s.

Stanislav Moša was also behind the idea and implementation of the operation of the contemporary Music Scene, which was established as the second theater building of the Brno Municipal Theater, and whose operation was ceremonially opened on October 2, 2004.

As a television director, he has several recordings of theater productions realized for Czech Television – The Perfect Wedding, School of the Foundation of Life, etc. In 2011, he hosted his own show on Czech Radio – Mikrofórum před přílnocí.

In 1992, Stanislav Moš was awarded the Czech Music Fund Award for the musical extravaganza Midsummer Night's Dreams. In 1996, he received the Brno City Award for the Municipal Theatre, and in Maribor, Slovenia, he received the Aesthetic Breakthrough Award for his direction of the musical Cabaret. In 2002, he was awarded the Nova Gorica City Award for his contribution to the development of relations between the Czech Republic and Slovenia. In 2010, he received the Theatre Newspaper Award for the musical Spring Awakening, in 2012 he received the Czech Chamber of Commerce Award and the Order of the Golden Laurel, and a year later, the theatre, literary and audiovisual agency DILIA awarded him the Lifetime Achievement Award. In the Brno TOP 100 poll, he is annually listed among the most important Brno personalities, and his Brno Municipal Theatre regularly appears in the section of the most successful organisations.
