MgA. Martin Glaser
He studied drama direction and dramaturgy at DAMU, founded the generational Divadlo na prahu and, while still a student, accepted an engagement at the South Bohemian Theatre, where he has been a regular director since 1998 and subsequently also as artistic director of the drama troupe. Glaser most often deals with the theme of manipulation and power in his productions: Václav Havel's Departure, Shakespeare's Macbeth or Something for Something, Hampton's Dangerous Relationships, Maupassant's Darling, Schwab's The President's Daughters and others. He also often returns to the theme of outsiderism, loneliness and uprootedness, as was the case in the productions of McDonagh's The Orphaned West or The Cripple of Inishmaan, Vedralov's Kašpar Hauser or Chekhov's Three Sisters.
He has a weakness for brutal grotesque, thrillers and detective stories. He entered this genre with Letts's Killer Joe or Agatha Christie's Mousetrap. He won the Josef Balvín Award for his production of Schimmelpfennig's play Arabian Nights, and Zelenka's play Purification, directed by him, was named the best performed Czech play at the Alfréd Radok Foundation Awards. His comedies written for the revolving auditorium in Český Krumlov in collaboration with dramaturg Olga Šubrtová (The Three Musketeers, The Women of Henry VIII or The Poor King, The Decameron, etc.) became hits with the audience.
He has been the director of the three-ensemble National Theatre in Brno since 2013. In this capacity, he is also the director of two international festivals organized by this theatre, one opera (Janáček Brno), the other mainly drama (Divadelní svět Brno).
In addition to "directing", he still directs and has created productions of Františák Havel in the Land of the Maids, Janáček's opera Jenůf pastorkyňa and Havlíček's Petrol Lamps for the NdB stage.
